About Homestead Restaurant
The Homestead Restaurant has been serving guests since the late 1940’s. The current owner Abbas Bagheri is proud to carry on a fine tradition of Southern Cuisine as well as serving weekly specials and other hearty favorites.
The restaurant sits on property that was acquired in a Spanish land grant in the late 1700’s. It has passed through several owners until it was purchased by Mrs. Alpha O. Paynter, one of Jacksonville’s most successful restaurateurs of the times. Originally designed as a private residence in 1934, the building is a two-story pine log construction that has most of the original interior features such as pine flooring and the massive lime rock chimney.
The Homestead Ghost
The ghost is said to be that of Alpha O. Paynter who operated the property as a boarding house before it became a restaurant. Previous owners share various stories of her roaming the old cabin area or standing at the top of the stairs. A kind spirit, she is said to be simply looking after the place and its guests.
